If you had three wishes for an unforgettable theatrical
experience, they would probably include fantastic music and
choreography, beautiful staging and costumes and great
performances. Yes, we realize those are five wishes, but
ALADDIN, the Hit Broadway Musical, delivers on them all in
addition to having a heartwarming story.
Based on the 1992 Disney animated film, Aladdin tells the
tale of a poor boy who falls in love with a Princess and must
overcome obstacles and adversity to win her hand. He’s
helped along by an exuberant, unstoppable master of magic—
the one, the only—Genie.
ALADDIN ocially opened on Broadway on March 20, 2014,
at the New Amsterdam Theatre and was nominated for five
Tony Awards that year. It has since become the fifth longest-
running show on Broadway. During its decade of delight, it has
entertained over 16 million people in nine productions worldwide.
To celebrate this special occasion, we spoke to the Genie
himself, Michael James Scott. Scott’s “Genie journey” as he
calls it, began when he opened the show on Broadway as the
Genie standby. Since then, he has transformed himself into the
mythical, magical character in both national and international
tours and on Broadway. His total time “out of the lamp” and
onto the stage? Over 3,000 performances!
THE HEART OF THE SHOW
Scott has compelling beliefs about what makes ALADDIN such
a beloved show. And it lies in something beyond its beauty,
humor and music. “What’s special about ALADDIN is what it’s
about,” he says. “It’s about heart. It’s about hope and sheer joy!”
Scott brings not only his energy and talent to his performance,
but also his love for the role. “It’s a wonderful feeling to play
a character everyone loves,” he says. “The Genie is the main
catalyst in the show. Everything that happens to everyone, is
because the Genie makes it happen. When Aladdin says the
Genie can have the third wish and he wishes to be free, it’s
the first chance he’s ever had to think about himself. Until that
moment, he’s always making magic for others.”
FAVORITE MOMENTS
Scott loves everything about the show, but even a Genie
can have his favorite scenes. For Scott, it’s the classic song,
“Friend Like Me”. “It’s a show-stopping, seven-minute-long
tap number brilliantly crafted by our world-class director-
choreographer, Casey Nicholaw,” he says. “The costumes
are stunning, the entire stage is gold, there are even
pyrotechnics. The energy is so high, and it builds and builds.
I’ve seen it bring the entire audience to their feet! It’s an
incredible moment to be a part of.”
A DECADE OF DELIGHT
Anything that has succeeded for 10 years is bound to
have seen some subtle changes over time. “We’re learning
something new all the time,” Scott explains. “We always want
the show to represent the world that we’re in. The genius of
our team is that they know how to do that,” Scott concludes.
“This is a show for everyone, it’s beloved around the world.
People connect with the story. I think it’s because ultimately,
it’s a universal story about hope.”

and your spirit with the newest rotational dining experience:
the beautiful Plaza de Coco restaurant.
“We are so excited and proud to bring this new dining
experience to our Guests,” says Juan Cantu, Show Director
Disney Live Entertainment. The new multi-night theatrical
dining experience immerses Guests in Santa Cecilia, Miguel’s
colorful hometown from Disney•Pixar’s Coco. “We have
created the essence of the town square in Miguel’s small
Mexican town,” Cantu says. “Guests will dine surrounded by
vibrant store fronts and trees, so they feel as if they’re sitting
outdoors in the Plaza while they feast on the flavors of Mexico.
It’s a beautiful setting.” The first night, Guests join Miguel, his
parents and his grandmother, Elena, as they prepare for Dia de
los Muertos with lively music, dancing and singing.
